Spirituality
Spirituality is an important issue for many people. Depression is an illness that raises many existential issues and brings many difficulties in terms of how you view life and 'God'. We are not here to provide spiritual guidance but rather to encourage you to remember not to neglect this area as it may be a valuable source of support and guidance at a very difficult time of your life.
First and foremost it is important to get medical treatment for depression. This being said, it is also important to request, if appropriate for your circumstances, that your spiritual and/or cultural beliefs be taken into consideration when undergoing treatment.
You may have thoughts about 'God', such as: "He is punishing me for...", which may be easier to discuss with your minister/priest/rabbi/spiritual leader. Remember that although they may offer much support and guidance, many spiritual advisors do not have formal training in psychotherapy or the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders.
Issues of Faith
A major problem faced by people who are actively involved in a church or a spiritual body is loss of faith. For a time, depression may undermine faith but with treatment this will change. Many people find that after the depression improves, their faith remains virtually intact.
