Can you turn to a priest/spiritual advisor while you are undergoing treatment?
The answer is generally yes. You should, of course, tell your priest/spiritual advisor that you are receiving treatment. It's also wise to tell your doctor or psychiatrist that you are seeking spiritual counsel. It may be confusing to receive counselling from a psychotherapist and a spiritual advisor at the same time. Talk to them about this. Together you can find a solution.
Hospitals often have a hospital chaplain or other appropriate person you can visit or contact.
Depression colours your relationship with 'God' just like your relationship with other people:
- Dark thoughts are all-pervading
- You begin to doubt your beliefs
- You doubt that you are "good enough"
- You may feel rejection or abandonment by 'God'
If you have contemplated suicide you may feel condemned. Some religions frown upon suicide and teach eternal condemnation as a consequence. It is important to know that this is a symptom of your illness and you must talk to your doctor if you feel you cannot talk to your spiritual advisor about this issue. Don't be afraid to get help.
What have I done wrong?
- Is it a punishment?
- Does God want me to be depressed?
- If not, why has God made me so unwell?
These may all be questions that your spiritual advisor can help you work through.
If you can find a good balance between spiritual advice and medical help, you will be well on the way to defeating your depression.
