Do you criticize yourself?
Your self-esteem may be closely tied up with your work. Self-esteem is often linked to an idealized rather than realistic image you have of yourself. When you think about the ideal you, you may feel self-confident. However, when you are depressed you are more likely to focus on the current you and you may criticize yourself and feel:
- Guilty
- Ashamed
- Low self-esteem
The following table will help you to see the differences between your three personas:
- The ideal you
- The current you
- The realistic you

Note that self-criticism is a symptom of depression. It can be excessive, and you should therefore seek therapy if it begins to damage your working life.
Once you learn to differentiate between symptoms and realistic self-criticism, you will be able to control your negative work-related thoughts. There's no doubt that the best approach is for you to remain active, e.g. at work. It's best for you if you can manage to get some of your work done until your depression passes. If it does not pass and is affecting your work you will have to take sick leave until you are fit to return.
