Can I get help?

Many families and relatives are affected by the illness to a greater or lesser extent. You can be affected by the illness both emotionally and financially, and the changes in your day-to-day life can result in you being severely affected.

As a relative it is important not to ask the impossible of either yourself or the depressed person. Depression cannot be overcome by willpower or by "pulling yourself together".

Do you need support?

Patience, understanding and knowledge are vital if someone in your family suffers from depression. You may also need help if you are to provide the necessary support.

You will not be alone in your feelings, thoughts and difficulties as a relative of someone suffering from depression. You may therefore derive support and relief from sharing your experiences with other people in your position.
