What can be done?
How can we deal with stigma, taboo and the underlying mythology?
Education is the key. If you are depressed or think you might be, please look through other parts of this web site. You need to learn as much about depression as you can. If you have not already done so, we urge you to see your doctor. Then, try to get your family and friends to learn about depression. They could start here.
If you are a relative or friend of someone who is depressed, you have found a good starting point. It will be worth your while to look through other parts of this site (if you haven't already) and especially to look into the stories of others who have found themselves in your position. Try to "spread the word" among others. If you'd like, you can contribute your story here to help others.
If you are a colleague, supervisor or manager of someone who is depressed, you are a very important person. Not only do you represent "The Public", but you are also a part of the environment where a depressed person is living. You may also be in the best position to dispel the mythology in your workplace, to lift the taboo and relieve the stigma. Look into the facts about depression if you have not done so already. You can also share your story for those who come after.
At the end of the day, knowledge is the only antidote for myth, stigma and taboo. We wish there were something simple, like a pill or a spray or something we could put in the water that would give instant insight. There isn't. Learning can be a long and difficult task but it is worth it.
Others in need
You too can help by sharing your story here and by encouraging others to learn more at websites such as this one. Visit again and share with others who suffer from depression and with those who live and work with them. If you have particular questions or concerns, talk to your Family Physician. The more you engage in the ongoing discussion and debate, the closer we will be to understanding depression - the closer we will come to defeating it. Help us help you and help us help others.
